Relaxing in Raro

The South Pacific invokes thoughts of unspoiled beaches and romantic tropical getaways, where magical islands with glorious mountain peaks and shimmering blue lagoons beckon, palm trees sway gently in the breeze, white sand beaches glimmer in the sunlight and the intoxicating scent of frangipani fills the air.  When you are looking for a truly magical tropical escape, where the simple act of slowing down can be one of the most rewarding highlights of a much needed holiday, one place stands out amongst the rest - the tropical paradise of Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

Just a short four hour fl ight from New Zealand, Rarotonga typifies what most of us are looking for when we think of the tropics. The experience is not manufactured; the culture, the traditions, the songs and dances, the food and delicacies have remained unchanged over the decades despite the growth of tourism.

The wealth of the land is not measured in Real Estate prices but rather in the abundance of ripening banana trees, fruiting pawpaw plants, groves of tall coconut palms, giant mango trees laden with juicy mangoes that ripen in the warm summer months, wild guava trees with too much fruit to pick and modest family houses fi lled with the sound of children laughing, grandmothers gossiping under the pandanus trees and office executives driving home on a motor scooter after a day of finalising deals with international banks.

This is how the Cook Island people have lived for decades…the pace is relaxed and unhurried.
