Ready to make a long- term commitment to New Zealand

Kalyx is a leading provider of prison services with significant expertise across the full spectrum of Private Public Partnership formats and, its parent company, Sodexo is engaged with 111 correctional facilities around the world – including in the UK, Australia, Chile and France.
A Kalyx built prisonThis breadth and depth of experience gives it access to international best practice and has taught the importance of understanding and reflecting the local culture of the countries in which it works.

Whaimutu Dewes, Kalyx representative, said Kalyx is delighted to have been short-listed for the Mt Eden-Auckland Central Remand Prison management contract.

Kalyx is ready to make a longstanding commitment to New Zealand and has assembled a special New Zealand Advisory Board. Board members are: former Ombudsman Mel Smith, University of Canterbury Criminologist, Dr Greg Newbold, architect and Māori cultural design expert, Saul Roberts, Samoan businessman and former All Black, Va’aiga (Inga) Tuigamala, and former Prison Inspector, Ruth Reese.

In addition, Kalyx has sought advice from a wide range of people in the preparation of its bid, particularly in relation to the needs of the Māori and Pasifika prison population. This is in line with the Department of Corrections precept that ‘to succeed overall we must succeed with Māori offenders’ but also reflects our own corporate values.

Kalyx takes a research-based, ‘what works’ approach to prisoner care, offering extensive rehabilitative programmes to prisoners and is a business with social purpose, providing custody with care for male and female prisoners and young offenders. It trains and educates prisoners for resettlement and provides opportunities for their rehabilitation on release from prison.

Combine that with an emphasis on security and with a discipline and attention to detail which has enabled Kalyx to deliver three major prison projects on time and within budget in the UK in the last five years.

Its parent company, Sodexo, had turnover in the 2008-09 financial year of approximately NZ$25 billion.
