The Miss Samoa New Zealand Pageant is one of the biggest annual events in the Samoan Communities’ events calendar. It started in Auckland in 1991 and has been under the direction of Sala Sally Newsham and the MSNZ committee since 1994. Up until 1999, the winner of the Miss Samoa NZ travelled directly to participate in the Miss South Pacific. From 2000, the reigning Miss Samoa NZ has been travelling to Apia Samoa to take part in the Teuila Festival and the Miss Teuila Pageant which is held each year in September. The winner of the Miss Teuila travels to the Miss South Pacific to represent Samoa.

The Miss Samoa NZ is a dynamic and colourful event dedicated to moulding Samoan women to reach their full potential as future leaders and role models of their communities.

Are island beauty pageants reflective of Pacific women today or are they losing their original ideals in favour of westernised notions of beauty and fashion?

so wat if it's the same person? lol. nah shame watever bro 21st century?k-psshh. the question asks ''are they losing their original ideals in favour of westernised notions of beauty and fashion?' -yea, i think the comp is actually. sorry if that's offensive to u, but that's my opinion. 'westernised notions of beauty and fashion'= boobtubes for the puletasi-that garment is a traditional garment worn for special occasions or for doing important feaus-aka taking the sua, showing off the ie togas-u wouldn't see a girl laulua-ing the faifeaus mea tausami in a puletasi showing off her cleavage. As for the girls, man God knows I'm giving you my opinion with a clean heart-no jealousy involved. bt thanks for thnking so. i'm not attacking the girls themslves COFFEE.-but the judging criteria, wat judges see as 'beautiful'-aka slim figure. all this goes out to the miss south pacific comp too. man COFFEE? bro, i might come across as being gutless or jealous. but im not man.-just getting sick of society making up 'rules' as to how a girl should look like-and the 7-year-olds who think being skinny is a must. stuff that mentality-in order to bring up solid, confident women, give them a real woman to look up to, a real rolemodel figure to aspire to become-not a plastic superficial way to be.-which many of these beauty pageants do. k enough. good debate going on anyway aye?lol :)xox

Hey Jozzy and Sassy, calm down! Are u2 the same person becoz u both sound lyke whining whingers....gees, give the girls a break, hope u r not jealous because you dont have the guts to do what they are doing. They are all judged the same and if they happen to look white so be it...wake up it's the 21st century not the 1950s.

yea miss samoa is so dumb man. the judges...oh man why not be different for once-get away from all the 'westernised beauty' look and go for the true samoan girl.-man i'd love to see a miss samoa who's *gasp not size 10. -wat about a healthy size 16 chika? and bloody hell forget the 'tourism' questions...for the interviews. gosh who gives. show them out by asking a samoan-history question. aka wat year did the mau occur? who died as a result? wana bet half those girls don't even know how to spell the prime minister's full name or even independence day. come on man...make the competition REAL. sarong section? wat the hell...lol. wat samoan girl in nz do u see in a one piece sarong meticulously wrapped around her body to not show off any 'bits'? it's strait t-shirt and shorts. if u wana tru representation of a samoan girls-approach the ones sasa-ing the vao out the front of the fale, getting taro leaves at the plantation or selling sea on the roadside. -not a girl who can't even boil rice. dam...no offence to anyone hopfully...but just being honest. this is a blog..lol. xox

YES YES AND YES!!! i've never understood this...NEVER. 'Miss Samoa'. hmmm.. why is it that every contestant's hair is always straightened? aka -ironed. wats wrong with wearing puletasis with limas? lol.. nah reals, wat is wrong with that? why u gota be wearing ur fia skaili ones? what's wrong with being real? and why can she never speak proper samoan?aka samoe-an? talk about wanabe white. why's their talent always to siva samoa? flip man every samoan girl should know how to siva-give us somthing different-do an indian dance or flick a poi or something. massive ups to the girl who can come out full jaff-nothing but baby oil enhancing her beauty, who can actually speak samoan, has a name like Peka and not Jacinta, Marlayna or Jaykwanda, has a pea with sleeves and can therefore represent the TRUE essence of a teine samoa moni. and world peace.

I hate to say it but my gripe is not pointed at those beauties brave enough to enter, but the mentality of those who end up judging and the criteria for judging. Is it just me or does every winner of a Miss Samoa or Miss South Pacific tend to be one with the fairest skin, straightest hair, or in other words, most palagi looking???
