The visiting international sides at the Suva Rugby Festival were given a harsh Sevens lesson by the local Fijian opposition on the opening’s day play of the international event.
The USA Cougars were the only team to lower Fijian colours on the opening day at the National Stadium, with IRB teams Samoa, Tonga, Canada and Papua New Guinea unable to match the size, speed and skill of the local teams.
Samoa was perhaps the biggest shock, going down 17-12 to villagers Ratu Felise with Canada edged out by one score to Veiyasana Malaysian Fijians, 19-14. Another side who will play at the NZI Sevens in Wellington in a matter weeks was Papua New Guinea who were comfortably beaten by the Wardens, wildcards for the event, 22-7.
Western Force and Manawatu were also on the receiving end as the first eight matches were played out and a first look was had at all teams in the feature event of the Digicel Suva Rugby Festival.
Fiji’s national team, playing as the Barbarians, kicked off their campaign with a convincing win 35-0 win over the Northern Sharks, with local sides Police and Suva also likely to progress.
“It’s good for the local boys to test themselves against the internationals,” said Fiji coach Ilisea Taniviula, while also asking for patience from the local fans. “First game up is always scrappy and we didn’t start well but I’m sure we will step up tomorrow”.
US Cougar Coach Al Caravelli also praised his side for a four-minute defensive period that was the key to their victory.
“The boys played really hard. We set some goals for this tournament and I knew if they played to those goals they would realise their potential which they did,” Caravelli said.
“Being here in Suva is a great build up to the IRB series and we have the best squad together since Wellington of last year.
