The Chiefs have named number eight Sione Lauaki as captain in a surprise move for the opening three rounds of the 2010 Super 14.
Lauaki - who has never captained a first class side - will lead the Chiefs in the absence of regular skipper Mils Muliaina for their away games against the Sharks, Lions and the Western Force.
All Black centre Richard Kahui was widely expected to lead the side following his recuperation from a shoulder injury which curtailed his season in 2009, but coach Ian Foster instead opted for the hard-running Lauaki to lead the side.
The decision to make Lauaki captain of the franchise is sure to raise eyebrows as he has had disciplinary problems in the past, but the Chiefs coach has come out and backed the leadership ability of the All Black ahead of the upcoming season
