Parker's final battle on home ground - at least for a while

Joseph Parker's IBF heavyweight title elimination bout against Carlos Takam will be held less than 10 kilometres from where he grew up in Mangere, at Manukau's Vodafone Events Centre.

The fight, set for Saturday 21st of May, will guarantee the winner a shot at the IBF World Heavyweight Title.

Parker, who is comfortable fighting in front of friends and family in surroundings he is familiar with, has fought at the Vodafone Events Centre twice before and is currently based in Las Vegas.

It has been reported that Parker may not get to fight in South Auckland again for a while, if ever again, after this battle.

And a long battle it will be, as predicted by Parker’s trainer, Kevin Barry.

"It's the kind of fight where if Joseph can't control the distance and allows Takam to get into the middle zone it's going to be a very hard fight for us to win," Barry said.

Parker will have to wear his opponent down, winning round by round.

Anthony Joshua took out Charles Martin on the 9th of April at The O2 Arena in London, to become the IBF World Heavyweight Champion.

If Parker beats the France-based Takam, he’ll go on to fight Joshua for a shot at the IBF World Heavyweight Title by January 2017- which will also be held in London.
