This week is Men’s Health Week. Auckland based provider Pacific Homecare says it’s an opportunity to become more aware of the health of our Pacific men.
Men’s Health Week aims to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among our men and boys.
Whether it’s our grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, nephews, husbands, partners or our friends, we need to look out for our Pacific men. It’s important to make sure they’re fit and healthy not just for the family but for themselves.
This year’s highlighted cause for Men’s Health Week is New Zealand’s fastest growing health crisis; diabetes.
Diabetes New Zealand’s messaging is in alignment with the messages of Men’s Health Week: it’s all about a healthy diet, regular exercise and regular health checks. Every positive change is a step towards better and longer lasting health and happiness.
Healthy diets include less processed foods and sugars and more fresh food and vegetables.
Exercising doesn’t have to be bad. If you make exercising a social experience, it can be fun for the whole group, whether it’s a family walk or joining a sports team.
Having a regular check with your doctor is important, especially when on average Pacific men die at least five years younger than other ethnicities and are prone to non-communicable diseases like type 2 diabetes.
Take preventative action to reduce the danger of these major health risks that, as Pacific men, we’re much more likely to come across.
If not for yourself then do it for your family and friends.
By starting an open discussion with friends and family and getting a yearly health check up with your GP, you can safeguard your lifestyle and wellbeing for years to come.
