Mark Vanilau- Making waves

Mark Vanilau

Mark Vanilau is a multi-instrumentalist with a velveteen voice and a unique approach to harmonies.

Best-known as a session musician (he’s a regular member of Dave Dobbyn’s band, and has played with Trinity Roots, Hollie Smith, Eru Dangerspiel, Ladi 6 and Scribe) he has stepped into the spotlight with his first single ‘Giant of the Sea’ and its emotionally-charged video.

The song was voted No 1 every day for a month, winning Vanilau a recording and video grant from NZ on Air.

It was inspired by Mark’s father and speaks of the tradition of passing life-stories down through the generations. It’s an atmospheric soundscape, produced and mixed by Warren Maxwell (Trinity Roots/Little Bushman), with lush strings from members of the APO, arranged by Ryan Youens.

For his video concept Director Karl Lear (RedYeti Films) gathered an impressive team. Cinematographer Donny Duncan delivered the beautiful visuals; his credits incude ‘Mr Pip’, ‘Emperor’ with Tommy Lee Jones, ‘Xena’.

Vanilau is now working on an EP produced by Warren Maxwell.
