Annual Tautai project OFFSTAGE7 provides artists platform to present new experimental work

OFFSTAGE 7 which goes from 3 to 15 September 2016 is an annual Tautai project which provides artists with an opportunity to present new and experimental moving image and performance work. This year’s OFFSTAGE is the third time that Artspace has collaborated on the event.

Curated by Auckland-based artist and writer Louisa Afoa, participating artists include Matavai Taulangau, Valasi Leota-Seiuli, Kelsi Tulafono, Sosefina Andy, Shivanjani Lal, Cora-Allan Wickliffe, Talia Smith, Pilimilose Manu and Jermaine Dean.

“OFFSTAGE 7 is just one element of Tautai’s ongoing support of artists,” says Tautai manager Christina Jeffery.

It provides a time and space for artists to present new moving image and performance work that is experimental and that many artists are still developing.

Artist and writer, and Tautai’s Auckland-based tertiary liaison, Louisa Afoa says, “OFFSTAGE 7 provides artists a platform to not only show new work but experiment with installation in a supportive space where artists have access to equipment they might not have in their studio".

She says the results are a snapshot of contemporary moving image and performance that is being produced right now.

“The works showcase and offer the audience a glimpse of the diverse scope of interests and concerns of contemporary Pacific art practitioners including gender, representation, class and embodied knowledge.”
